HAWAII (KAUAI) DAY #10: The Sabbath

HAWAII (KAUAI) DAY #10: The Sabbath

We got up bright and early and tried to beat the clouds to the
Kalalau Valley Lookout up Waimea Canyon.

Success

Boo-yah
is that how you even spell that?

We attended church at the first ward Clayton served in on his mission.  Seeing how it has been 11 years since he has been here he was a little nervous that he would remember people, but that they wouldn't remember him.

We walked in as they were singing the opening prayer and as we sat down I noticed that one of the guys blessing the sacrament was looking at Clayton with a big smile... an "I remember you" smile.  As soon as the meeting was over we were surrounded by the nicest people in all of the world!  Clayton's nerves went away as many of the people did remember him.  One of my favorite people was Dasa.  He is a full blooded Hawaiian from who could hardly speak English when Clayton served in Kekaha.  Today he is extremely fluent and so friendly.  He talked to me about how he went to the mainland (LA) for the first time a little bit ago.  He was in so much awe with the buildings and everything.  He was talking about wanting to come to Utah to learn how to snowboard.  So Dasa if you are reading this COME TO UTAH AND WE WILL TOTALLY HOOK YOU UP.  I would have to say that attending the Kekaha Ward was one of my Kauai highlights.

This little white box is the first place Clayton laid his head to sleep (aka his first apartment) when he came to Hawaii for his mission.

After Church we headed over to the Menehune Ditch.

Interesting Fact: It is believed that this ditch was built before Polynesians even stepped foot on the islands.  The way the stones are stacked are not how ancient Hawaiians cut and stacked the stones.  It is more like how the Lamanites and Nephites cut and stacked stones.
Hmmm...Interesting

Across the road from the Menehune Ditch is the Waimea Swinging Bridge.
Yes it really does swing.
Captain Cook Monument
We also saw one of these when we were on the Big Island in 2008.
This one was a lot easier to get to.
Like across the street easy.
Another swinging bridge
Hanapepe Swinging Bridge

Hanapepe Valley Lookout

Menehune Fish Pond
They say that this pond was built by the Menehune in ONE night over 1,000 years ago.
Wailua Falls

By the time we got back to the hotel we were famished.
What do you do when you are hungry?
You eat cake and bread pudding of course.
Diet of Champions
Kilauea Lighthouse
 Precious.
Do you think he was tired of all the pictures???

Finally back to the hotel to pack up.

*Sigh*

End of Day 10
