HAWAII - DAY #8

HAWAII - DAY #8

Day #8 started with a run down the Kam highway. I mention this for two reasons. 1) running on the North Shore is so pretty that we almost don't feel the pain that running causes. I said almost. 2) we forgot our iPods. Running without music is a HUGE accomplishment for us. That being said I will now pat myself on the back.

After that we hit Ali'i Beach Park. Clayton remembers this beach from his school days as the beach where he caught his most memorable wave surfing. I remember this beach from our trip in 2008 when I stepped in dog poop. memories.

Later we met up with Buttons Kaluhiokalani who hooked us some stand up paddle (SUP) boards. Buttons is apparently an old surfing icon in Hawaii from the 70's. Google him. The guy is crazy but totally awesome at the same time. He had some great stories to tell. My personal favorite was when he was chased by Dog the Bounty Hunter back in 2007. He was into drugs back then, but has been clean for 3 years. He also has a "mormon sized family". Although it took him a while to count all of his kids and remember which wives/girls they came from. Seriously the guy his hilarious. If you are ever in Hawaii and need a hookup with surfboards/SUP boards call him.

Buttons ventured down the river with us. Check out his 6-pack. Clayton and I were in awe. Did I mention that he is 52 years-old? Buttons, his naked bambino, Clayton and I. So if you are in Hawaii and want to see turtles...lots of turtles don't go to Turtle Beach. Go to Anahulu river in Haleiwa. We saw probably 10-12 turtles swimming or sunning on the river.
Picture Button's took of himself with our camera.
After SUPing we were starving so we headed to one of our favorite eats on the North Shore...Storto's. This is a HALF sandwich and this picture doesn't do the size of this bad boy justice.

"BEWARE! Sandwich Stealing CHICKENS"
Nice!
With food in our stomachs we headed out to uncharted territory...Ka'ena Point. Ka'ena Point is the westernmost point of the island. Not much there either. It is hot, dry and windy. We were told that we would need 4 wheel drive to get to the trail head. We doubted that. Come to find out you REALLY DO NEED 4 wheel drive. After almost high centering the Camry a few times we found that out.
Hidden Beach
Secluded Cove
My soaker tub
Sacred Rock (we think)
There supposedly is a rock out in Ka'ena point that ancient Hawaiian believed your soul went to when you died. If your ancestors caught you when you jumped then they would lead you to the hereafter. If they didn't then you would roam the island as a night marcher...or something like that.

West side of the island
After that we were pretty much drained. We headed out, hit a few shops in Haleiwa and called it a night.
