THE ISLAND WHERE ANTS ELOPE

If you call 57 degree weather beautiful (which I don't) then last Saturday was a B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L day. Clayton and I were feeling antsy to do something (I can only make him watch so many Saved by the Bell reruns) and since snow still covers the majority of our hellish state (well the mountains anyway) so we decided to venture out to Antelope island.

After paying our $9 entrance fee (seriously! $9! Next time I'll brave the disease infested water and swim to the island), and holding our breath from the welcome stench the Great Salt Lake brings we arrived on the island.

HEIDI: (upon first impression of the island) This island needs some palm trees.
CLAYTON: Ummm...it needs a little more than palm trees.
HEIDI: ya, but palm trees would spruce it up a bit.

I got out the pamphlet the lovely ranger lady gave us (my $9 pamphlet) at the entrance and it listed all the animals that we might see. Let me summarize it for you...antelope, buffalo and 20 thousand different species of birds. I got all excited because it said that we might see buffalo mating (maybe the $9 entrance fee would be worth it), then I looked closer and it said that they didn't mate until AUGUST. Dang. Was looking forward to some immoral behavior from the big furry guys. Oh well.
Our first buffalo sighting. Don't believe it's real? Check out the second picture closely. Buffalo SCAT. Thank you Lewiston Elementary 5th grade field trip to Teton Natal Park for the knowledge that the proper name of poop is scat.
Clayton wanted me to see if any more was about to come out. I was foolish enough to look. Buffy our buffalo must of had a recent colonoscopy because he was as clean as the Disney Channel.

Later we came across some of Buffy's bros.

Fine lookin' specimen are they not? I wanted to go closer, but my overprotective husband (just kidding C-diddy) forbade me. Said they would eat me.

More buffalo scat for your viewing pleasure. We didn't dig around in it to see what the buffalo enjoy for lunch, but I'm pretty sure there were bones from small children in there.

Whenever Clayton sets the timer on the camera he makes us pose like we are taking engagement photos. I won't hold anyone back from making fun of us.

Ahhh the namesake of the island...the Antelope. We only spotted one. It looked lonely. Wanted to be its friend, but Clayton said it would eat me too.

We drove around the island to this old ranch. Didn't get many pictures. These two will have to suffice. The ranch was pretty cool. Had a lot of old machinery and stuff. They had the rooms and stuff set up similar to how they were in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

By this time we were famished. We had big plans to play croquet on the sandy-salty shores, but hunger (as always) won out. However, I could leave without sticking my foot in the GSL just to say that I had.

I love this last picture of me in the water. It looks like I'm about to pee my pants. They say that the GSL is saltier than the ocean and I believe it. I'm still finding salt in my toes. Ok not really because that would be gross and I do shower...on occasion.

Good times. However, next time we go I'm importing a palm tree to plant.

Hey Rachel! Remember that gift card to Tempanaki you gave us for Christmas in 2006? Well we finally used it. We stopped there on our way home and blew it all at the sushi bar. LOVE sushi. It wasn't as good as this little hole in the wall on the Big Island (or as cheap), but it was still excellent. I can't believe that we waited 2.5 years to use it. Nothing against Tempanaki, we have been there for the shows and they are awesome...we just always go somewhere else when we are down that way.

Adios.

Sadly, I've never been to Antelope Island and now I'm not so sure if we will venture out there. Maybe, I mean buffalo scat is cool.

Thanks for bringing back fond memories of the Teton Science School and scat. I'd forgotten all about that! Good, good times!

P.S. So sad that I tried to sign up for your March Madness thing a few weeks ago but was too late. I'm an idiot!
